I-Team: Felon's Non-Profit Goes to Court

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- He wanted to open a low-cost, non-profit clinic that could help thousands of people in southern Nevada. But along with big dreams came the sometimes hidden truth -- Barry Michaels was a convicted felon, accused of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past.

Now Michaels is in court again, fighting allegations he failed to pay over $100,000 in bills. After his appearance in court, Michaels used some salty language to blame 8 News NOW for his troubles -- not his previous three felony convictions, his lackluster fundraising or failed congressional bids.

I-Team: Who Can You Trust?

Michaels was in court to defend himself and his clinic Mini-Care from thousands of dollars in unpaid rent. Michaels had hoped Mini-Care would become a revolutionary change to health services with $22 visits

At the time, he took 8 News NOW on a tour of the renovated area and had a grand opening, of sorts. But it appears Mini-Care never got off the ground.

The court hearing focused on a summary judgement against Michaels and Mini-Care for over $100,000 after allegedly breaking the lease. The judgements are both aimed at Michaels personally and the company proper.

Monday, both were given extra time to reveal problems at the building that were never resolved. Mini-Care's attorney believes he and Michaels will prevail.

"There are so many issues in this case and I will hope we will have the opportunity to bring everything before the court. That is why we have a counter-claim," said attorney Guinness Ohazuruike.

Michaels was convicted and properly served his time for Family Airlines, a plan from the 90's. Prosecutors said he used money from investors for personal items, Mercedes Benz car payments and country club memberships.

Michaels said he always wanted a second chance, yet as stories in the past showed, he is trying to create the exact same airline again.

Michaels and Mini-Care will have a few more weeks to make a proper counter-claim and have another day in court in the middle of August.
