LAS VEGAS -- The arrest of several police impersonators has prompted Las Vegas police to release some information on how to best protect yourself. They want you to know what to look for and who to call in case you are ever confronted by an imposter.
Monday, Metro released a crime alert notice to the public. It shows what a Metro badge, Metro uniform patch and a Metro ID looks like. It's just a few of the things you need to look for and recognize in order to not become a victim.
"They will be carrying a picture ID that has their name, a personnel number and expiration date on that ID and they need to produce that when you ask for it," said Metro Officer Laura Meltzer.
When it comes to unmarked vehicles, Officer Meltzer says to look for specific strobing lights. Each police car is equipped with red, white and blue lights and a siren. These lights are built into the car and not attached to the outside.
"Something like a little orange bubble or flashing headlights to indicate to pull over, police officers will use the light packages they have on their cars," she said.
Meltzer says if you are unsure, put your hazards on and call 911. The dispatcher should able to verify if you are being pulled over. The say to drive to a well-lit, heavily populated area. But keep in mind that it is not hard to get official looking equipment.
Officer Meltzer says it is a reminder to be vigilant and to not be afraid to ask questions. If you are still unsure, police say you can request a marked unit to come to the scene.
