Las Vegas Teacher Receives National Honor

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas high school teacher has been honored nationally for her skills in the classroom and kitchen.

Mornings are always bright in Ann Taylor's class at Silverado High School. Taylor has been cooking up success in her culinary classes. The now two-time National ProStart Teacher of the Year has been teaching culinary and nutrition classes at Silverado for 10 years. ProStart is a program designed to help students around the country enter the restaurant job market after graduation.

"The biggest motivation I have again is my students and being able to go out and see them having success in the restaurant industry is a real motivation," said Ann Taylor, Silverado High School teacher.

She says she has a metaphor that she likes to use for her students. "The first thing I teach is that spoons serve, and that we're spoons. It's interesting because a lot of students don't have the opportunity to serve others at this age, but in our classes they do."

"She's always happy. She's always so happy," said Bryanna Buffone, Silverado Ranch junior.

"She's more of a best friend to me than a teacher," said Sariaye Jensen, Silverado High senior.

At the end of the class, Taylor's students know how to cook, how to budget for meals, what foods to buy, and how to tackle the real world problems they'll face in the restaurant industry.

"She really did deserve this award. I was so happy for her, and I can't wait to have her next year as well," said Buffone.

Food brings people together, and there's nowhere that's more true than in Taylor's classroom at Silverado High.

"Kids have a lot of baggage. But one of the great things about a foods class and culinary is that it kind of brings everyone together. It's like a family," said Taylor.
