Cool at School: Nevada's Best Drum Line

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS-- A group of students are making quite a bit of noise at Foothills High School. They're part of an award winning drum line.

Foothill's drum line is the best in Nevada and the 8th best in the world. Senior Nate Root said he feels the pressure, but it's not a bad thing.

"If it's not always 100%, it's unacceptable. I like the level we are expected to perform at."

The indoor marching percussion ensemble finished in 8th place at the World Championships in Ohio. Teacher Nick Waters said the drum line's major accomplishments are a team effort.

"They are very dedicated. You would have to be to rehearse hundreds of hours like they do and put in the hard work they do to accomplish 8th place in the world."

The group meets after school, but still receives high school credit for the class. Foothill sophomore Julie Diaz said being a part of the team takes a lot of willpower.

"We are put at a high level so we have to do everything at a high level. It's not a grade. You have to do this on your own and live up to the expectation on your own."

Junior Kevin Curry said some of his classmates don't realize how much work goes into being part of the drum line.

"Playing a drum, people think you just come up and hit it, but if you just came up and hit it, you wouldn't be able to take 8th place in the world like we do. You have to get taught, play with articulation and musicality."
