High-End Gym Opens in Summerlin Area

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Summerlin is getting a huge addition to its community this week. Lifetime Athletic is opening their doors on Friday to their members. While some say the economy won't support another gym, this company disagrees.

The project has been in the works for several years. Like so many other companies, they had to stop construction temporarily back in 2008 because of the economy. But the Lifetime Athletic spokesperson Jason Thunstrom says they have confidence in the current economic climate and the demographic they are targeting. The company is located on Charleston Blvd. near Hualapai.

The buzz around Summerlin's Lifetime Athletic gym has been high for months and the rumors about cafes and a 50-foot rocking climbing wall are all true.

"We believe that this is the right market, that the consumers will see just how different this experience is," said Jason Thunstrom, Lifetime Athletic.

The whole property takes up more than 200,000 square feet. After years of stalled construction, Thunstrom says they could no longer sit on their investment. They feel the economic tide is turning and they intend to capitalize. It has everything from a full salon to a spa, daycare facility, and even an indoor turf field.

But that luxury comes with a price and that's why the facility set up shop in Summerlin.

"We're looking for household incomes, presence of families, looking for population density, population growth," said Thunstrom. He says they already have several thousand members signed up.

That's not sup rising for Applied Analysis principal Brian Gordon. "It's just a different business model. They are catering to another market and from what I can tell. It's a significantly higher investment and they're just offering a different product than some of the other players," said Gordon.

Memberships range from $119 dollars a month for a single person to $250 dollars a month for a family. And if you think those prices are too high to survive, think again.

"Summerlin obviously has a high end demographic. Henderson is also well situated in terms of high end incomes," said Thunstrom. He isn't worried saying their business plan is rock solid.

This is actually Lifetime's 92nd club in the U.S. so they have a lot of experience in the industry. Tonight at 7 p.m. they are allowing the surrounding community to come in a take a look around. The facility officially opens Friday morning.
