Cool at School: Kindergartners Learn to Debate

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS--The Great Debate is on in the kindergarten class at Bright Horizons. Students are arguing over what animals are better all while developing important skills.

The UNLV debate team is in the classroom nearly every day. The goal is to mold the young students into thinkers and speakers.

Jacob Thompson, UNLV Speech and Debate Coach said, "They are learning critical thinking skills, to not take things for granted, learning to be good sports, cooperate with each other, and I think the most important lesson is discussion and debate solves problems in stead of pushing, hitting, ect."

The director of Bright Horizon agrees this program is great for his students.

"I think it's cool because children need to learn how to argue in a healthy way. I think it's good for conflict resolution, kids need to learn how they can have an opinion and they can voice their opinion and that their voice can be heard."

UNLV hopes to have this program in other classrooms across the school district.
