International Manhunt Leads to Murder Arrest

LAS VEGAS -- Hugh Cave sold his home on Gold Avenue near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Owens Avenue and left the country in early February. What police say he left behind in his backyard is gruesome.

An anonymous neighbor who asked to be called "Junior" went into the Caves' backyard on April 23.

"My new neighbor asked me if I could remove a planter box," he said. "I just couldn't understand why there were so many layers of black plastic bags and all this white stuff… I dug a little bit more and a little bit more, and I moved a little dirt, and all of a sudden, I'd seen this rope."

He grew suspicious. Police arrived and confirmed his worst fears. He unearthed a human grave.

"It shocked the hell out of me to be honest with you, because I would not have expected to find something like that," he said.

Evidence quickly pointed to Cave. Court documents reveal his wife Gloria suddenly vanished last December.

Hugh Cave told people in Las Vegas his wife had to rush to the Philippines in December to see her brother who was on his death bed.

He told her family in the Philippines she was killed in an automobile accident in Las Vegas the day after Christmas.

In an e-mail to the new homeowner, Cave wrote Gloria had been killed in a car accident at the beginning of the year. Cave said that's why he sold the house quickly and for less than its appraised value.

Police say Cave was on the run, but not for long. "Our Criminal Apprehension Team has a lot of experience in locating such individuals," said Metro Police Officer Jay Rivera. "So, for them to find someone who thinks they can outrun the long arm of the law, they're completely mistaken."

Meanwhile, Junior says he has had some uneasy nights but hopes justice is served. "I damn sure hope so. I damn sure hope so, because to do something like this, it's not right, not at all," he said.

Gloria was working as a nurse. Metro says Hugh Cave faxed her employer a fake a resignation letter December 16. Records show she last saw a patient December 15.

Hugh Cave will be extradited to Las Vegas to stand trial.
