LAS VEGAS -- NV Energy presented the city of Las Vegas with a rebate check for $3.5 million dollars Monday. The money serves as recognition of the city's effort to install energy efficient solar panels at seven locations across the city. It was a project that cost $6.8 million dollars.

"As you are probably aware, Friday is Earth Day. So, it's fitting that we are celebrating the completion of a major project that's created new jobs in our community," Betsy Fretwell, Las Vegas City Manager, said while addressing a crowd Monday morning.

The solar panels are on carports at the following locations:

  • Mirabelli Community Center
  • Centennial Hills Community Center
  • Durango Hills Community Center
  • East Las Vegas Community Senior Center
  • Veteran's Memorial Community Center
  • All American Park
  • Ed Fountain Park

The project created 74 jobs across the Las Vegas Valley.

"The city-wide plan for solar covered carports is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 260 homes and reduce the city's carbon footprint by more than 2,000 metric tons," said Fretwell.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said the carports are featured at community centers and accent the beauty of the buildings.

"It keeps the whole context of what we're trying to accomplish here, so people will feel that they have a dignified way of living in Las Vegas," said Mayor Goodman.

"It means better air quality, it means jobs, and it means sustainability," said John Owens, Director of Energy Efficiency for NV Energy.

The solar carport parking plan coupled with renewable energy installations at the city's wastewater treatment plant will provide clean, renewable energy equal to approximately 11% of all energy used at city facilities.
