Cool at School: Students Working Overtime

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS-- Students at Keller Elementary are waking up extra early to go to school. The SWOT team or Students Working Overtime, are in the school for nine-and-a-half hours every day.

They start at 7:30 a.m. and wrap up at 5 p.m. Student Eli Quintanilla said it's worth it. "I like to do this because mostly we learn a lot, we have a lot of fun and we have so many field trips that are fun."

The kids are all fifth graders preparing for the state wide assessment of how they're doing in math and reading.

S.W.O.T. instructor Ben Saokowe said since they started the program at the beginning of the year, they have seen grades go up. "We've seen a lot of students that struggle with different things in the past years really buckle down once they have this commitment."

Students aren't just sitting at their desk and studying for nine hours. Everyday they get to take part in other activities including flag football, yoga and scrap booking.

Tutors are also available to help them with homework.
