LAS VEGAS -- Nearly 12,000 pets in Clark County were sterilized last year as compared to 6,000 in 2008.
The increase comes after the County Commission adopted a new law requiring most dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered.
February is National Spay/Neuter Month. County residents are being reminded to get their pets sterilized to avoid pet overpopulation. More than 30,000 cats and dogs are still being euthanized every year.
The ordinance requires dogs and cats four months and older must be spayed or neutered. There are exemptions for those with a fancier's permit, breeder's permit or a notarized letter from their veterinarian attesting to why the animal can not be sterilized.
