LAS VEGAS -- Some 1,200 Clark County students got a chance to choose the school they want to attend next year. They were able to do that because of the Open Enrollment program.
Last Fall, the school district notified parents and students that they could pick any school in the district, providing it had room for them. They received 1,200 applications from all over Clark County.
"What we found out was, low and behold, a lot of students requested to come here," said Dr. Jeff Geihs, Liberty High School principal. There will be 122 new students at the Henderson school. "I'm told that Liberty High got the most applications out of the schools available for open enrollment."
Liberty High School did get the most applications out of the 104 schools that had space to take more students. There were 453 high school students that applied to change schools.
Doctor Geihs thinks it Liberty's unique classes that made them number one on the list. "The difficult foreign language programs. The classical studies programs we offer," he said.
"The open enrollment provides another choice, another option for students to find a school that meets their needs," said Clark County Instruction Director, Dr. Byron Green. He says the program gave students the choice to research and make their own decisions.
"We believe that by opening the door for students and families to find a school that best meets their needs, it's a win win."
It is also a win win situation for Principal Geihs who has been trying to recruit more students. Liberty has the least amount of students out of all the highs schools with slightly more 2,000.
"We had 500 seats available and we got 122 applications," he said.
Parents and students will receive their acceptance letters by mail in February. The school district will be accepting open enrollment applications again in the Fall.
