One word describes why this ‘Carolina Girl' is so far from home: Opportunity.
Sharie Harvin joined 8 News NOW in January 2011 and considers this a chance to learn a new culture while sharing stories that matter to Nevadans.
Sharie was born in Sumter, South Carolina and raised in Houston, Texas. Her TV career started as a news reporter at WABG in Greenville, Mississippi. Most affectionately called "The Delta," the area suffers from the worst health status in the United States. Sharie covered everything from the region's crisis to federal trials to blues and heritage fests.
Her next stop was WLTX in Columbia, South Carolina starting as education reporter, then switching to news and finally noon anchor. While there, she had the opportunity to travel to Louisiana for the rebuilding of Hurricane Katrina. Sharie also did reports in Port-au-Prince, Haiti after the 7.0 earthquake devastated the already poor country.
Sharie graduated from the historic Rust College in Mississippi studying abroad in The Gambia, West Africa. Her research focused on the stages of developing versus under-developing countries. She visited the infamous "Door of No Return" in Senegal, West Africa as well as schools and orphanages there.
A member of The Society of Professional Journalists and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; she enjoys volunteering, traveling and quality time with family.
Sharie's learned the one thing that separates Americans from any other people, are the opportunities we have everyday; but how we use them is what makes you unique!
So don't hesitate to take a second and e-mail Sharie your thoughts or even a story idea.
