Transition for Clark County School District

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A changing of the guard took place at the Clark County School District Wednesday.

New Superintendent Dwight Jones took over the reigns from Dr. Walt Rulffes. One of the first things the new Superintendent did was meet with Rulffes and Governor-Elect Brian Sandoval.

Jones is from Denver, where he has been Colorado's Commissioner of Education.

Sandoval and Jones came face to face for the first time in a private meeting where the future of education and more possible cuts were to be addressed.

Things are starting to take shape for new Clark County Superintendent Jones. From little things, like the name plate on the superintendent's office, to meeting with the new governor.

"Today is the start of a new day and I am excited to about having a conversation with the new governor-elect," Jones told reporters.

Jones is coming into the district at a time when Sandoval has hinted that more cuts are possible.

"I did have a chance to read his education plan and his plan aligns quite well with a lot of the things I think we have to think about in this district," said Jones.

Sandoval's education plan was highlighted during his campaign. He's confident Superintendent Jones will meet him half-way.

"Education is something that is extremely important to me. The Superintendent has already shared with me that he has already reviewed the education plan that I put forward during the coarse of the campaign and there's several areas we can work together on," said Sandoval.

Jones was briefed when asked about vouchers to help bring in more money for schools.

"I think I am going to have a chance to talk to the governor about that certainly. "We have a school district in Colorado that's bringing vouchers forward," said Jones.

Sandoval was asked about more cuts and that's when he cut off reporters and headed into the private meeting with Jones and outgoing Superintendent Walf Ruffles.
