Donations to Nevada Scholarship Fund Top 100K

Posted: Updated:

CARSON CITY, Nev.  -- Donations to the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium Scholarship Fund have reached nearly $105,000.

Nevada Treasurer Kate Marshall on Tuesday said more than 375 people have contributed to the fund established in honor of the former governor who died this summer. Guinn pushed for creation of the Millennium Scholarship program in 1999. Since then, it has helped more than 60,000 Nevada high school graduates attend college.

Money donated to the memorial fund is being kept in an account separate from the state  program. Marshall says the Guinn family has sanctioned an idea to use the donated funds to further assist students majoring in education. She says Sen. Bill Raggio of Reno will sponsor a bill in the 2011 legislative session authorizing use of the funds.
