Cool at School: Red Ribbon Week

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- There is nothing like dancing in the morning to increase the heart rate. However at Tarkanian Middle School, the kids are dancing for another reason.

Red Ribbon Week encourages kids to stay away from drugs. At Tarkanian Middle School, students, faculty members, and some parents are doing an impromptu flash mob dance at the school.

"So many kids these days think everyone is doing drugs, so they think they can do it too. It's just to tell people that they are not alone if they don't do it," said eighth grade student Hannah Raymond.

Nearly 200 students, faculty and parents spent weeks preparing for the impromptu flash mob dance in the middle of the school to call attention to Red Ribbon Week. In addition to the dance and a series of activities, the students each sign a drug-free pledge.

Saying no to drugs in middle school is crucial.

"It's really important. They are very influential at this age," said teacher Sara Paonessa.
