Three Square Gets Donation to Help Fight Hunger

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Three Square got a big donation to help more Nevadans fight hunger. The help came in the form of a $50,000 check from Bank of America. The grant will allow Three Square to do more Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program outreach.

According to Three Square, only 52 percent of those eligible for SNAP actually receive benefits, while only 30 to 40 percent of seniors take advantage of it. That has been putting a strain on Las Vegas area food banks.

Bank of America presented the check to help Three Square reach out to more people and help out with SNAP application assistance.

The grant is part of a $1.1 million donation to Feeding America, and to connect them with SNAP services, formerly known as food stamps.

"It's hard because Social Security hasn't given us a raise in two years, but all the other bills keep going up. So sometimes food is the last thing you go for," said Thelma Northrup.

Northrup recently applied for SNAP and is now receiving benefits. She gets an extra $16 a month for food. It may not seem like a lot, but Northrup says it goes a long way for her.

With the grant, Three Square expects to help 2,200 SNAP-eligible people in the valley.
