CARSON CITY, Nev. -- The Bureau of Land Management says it is suspending plans to round up more than 100 wild horses late this month from a northern Nevada range at the Hawthorne Army Depot.
BLM Stillwater Field Office Manager Terri Knutson said in a statement Tuesday that officials want time to evaluate a proposal that horse advocate groups made last week to solve safety risks posed by horses drifting onto U.S. Highway 95 near Hawthorne.
Knutson says officials agreed to study whether fencing could keep wild horses off the highway. Advocates also propose long-term maintenance of the band of horses currently living at the Army facility.
Officials say at least seven wild horses were hit and killed by vehicles last February and March along highway U.S. 95 near Walker Lake.
