LAS VEGAS -- A once dismal shopping center is slowly starting to bustle again near the Meadows Mall.
A strip mall next to Meadows Mall fell on tough times in recent years. Mervyns, the anchor store, filed bankruptcy and closed and soon the other businesses shut down as well. Now, a few new businesses are moving into the area because they see potential.
Cardenas, a major Hispanic grocery store, will take over the former Mervyns store on Meadows Lane.
"There's supposed to be a great big supermarket that is supposed to offer all sorts of products and not just for the Spanish community," said Michael Patane, IC Movers.
Patane's business is next to where the store will be located. He moved into the location because he got a good deal.
"I hate to say it but the rent was very cheap because they wanted to get anybody in here. All of the businesses that were here before me for some reason closed down," he said.
Other businesses are also moving into the area. Reynaldo Martinez opened his Hollywood Furniture store two weeks ago.
"There are a lot people in this neighborhood, and for a long time I was waiting for a space like this to service the people in this area," he said.
Martinez and others who are opening up in this area are working to cross promote their services.
"When people come to that business, their customers are our customers and our customers are theirs. It's going to be good for everybody. For customers and for business people," said Martinez.
Opportunity Village opened up earlier this week in the same shopping center. Cardenas grocery store is expected to open by the end of the year. Other vacant shops in the center have been leased out as well.
