LAS VEGAS - Sources tell the I-Team one of the central figures in the FBI's "Medical Mafia" investigation refused to testify to a grand jury on Wednesday.
Medical "fixer" Howard Awand was subpoenaed to testify about several attorneys thought by prosecutors to have played a role in the "Medical Mafia" scheme.
More than two dozen local physicians and attorneys are suspected of participating in the conspiracy that squeezed hundreds of millions of dollars out of injured patients, legal clients, and insurance companies. Awand was one of only three people to be indicted so far.
Federal prosecutors could now offer Awand immunity in exchange for his testimony. If Awand does not take that deal, he could be charged with contempt of court. He is already behind bars on a plea deal regarding this case and for failing to pay millions in income taxes.
His attorney Harland Braun told the I-Team last week that Awand has already told prosecutors everything he knows.
