CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Nevada's education chief says his agency has been unable to fill critical positions because of a mandate from the governor's office that new hires start at the lowest salary grade.
Superintendent Keith Rheault told a legislative committee Wednesday that the requirement has stymied efforts to fill administrative positions, such as a math consultant and analyst who compiles the state's school report card.
Rheault says two finalists for one job turned it down because it would have been a substantial pay cut. He says other staff members have left because of furloughs imposed last year and concerns about pending cuts in state health coverage.
Two other agencies, the Division of Housing and Medicaid, were told by the governor's office not to attend the meeting.
