Court Clears Way for Wild Horse Roundup

Posted: Updated:

RENO, Nev. -- A federal appeals court has cleared the way for the government roundup of more than 2,000 wild horses in California and Nevada.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco refused late Tuesday to grant an emergency stay sought by critics who say the free-roaming mustangs have a legal right to remain on the range along about 120 miles north of Reno.

The order upholds a federal district court ruling in Sacramento last week. It means the Bureau of Land Management can begin the helicopter-aided gather as scheduled on Wednesday. The roundup is expected to last four to six weeks.
