A federal judge sentenced a prominent Las Vegas surgeon Thursday morning for his role in the so-called Medical Mafia conspiracy.
Under the terms of a plea agreement accepted by the court, Dr. Mark Kabins will spend five years on probation with home confinement for the first six months.
Kabins pleaded guilty late last year to misprision of a felony, meaning he knew about federal crimes being committed but didn't report them. Prosecutors allege a network of Las Vegas doctors and lawyers rigged medical malpractice cases and split the profits without their client's knowledge.
Kabins admits he conspired with others to avoid a medical malpractice suit in the case of Melodie Simon. Simon, an Olympic athlete, became paralyzed after undergoing spine surgery.
As part of his sentence, Kabins must pay Simon $3.5 million in restitution.
