About 800 walkers turned out on Saturday for the annual "Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes" at the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.
Dozens of volunteers worked tirelessly to make the event a success. In all, 80 teams took part raising $80,000 which is an increase over last year. All the money supports the American Diabetes Association's mission which is to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all people affected by the disease.
The walkers were helping themselves as well as the cause. Moderate exercise has been found to be the most beneficial kind of diabetics. It appears to be even better than vigorous exercise. The researchers say moderate intensity exercise may burn more fat and that in turn helps the pancreas work better.
