Millions in Tax Rebates Owed to Las Vegas Residents

There are thousands of names on the IRS list. There are thousands of names on the IRS list.

This financial crisis has some people hoping Congress will pass another economic stimulus package to get the economy moving again. But the government is still trying to hand out a few million dollars to Nevada taxpayers from the first stimulus package. The hard part is finding them.

Between the stimulus checks and tax refunds owed to Nevadans, the IRS list is worth about $4 million. Uncle Sam is now tracking taxpayers down who've seemingly disappeared.

A trip to the IRS usually is not a fun thing -- take a number and prepare to pay up. The 1040's and all the number crunching is taxing enough, but the reward comes when the refunds and stimulus checks show up.

You may be on the list and not even know it. The IRS could actually owe you hundreds right now.

"People have moved and not given us a new address, and so the checks go out and they come back to us and they sit until we get a new address," said Maria Kollender with the IRS.

Eyewitness News told you the IRS is having trouble handing out $4 million to thousands of Nevada taxpayers. After the broadcast, the station was inundated with phone calls. Most people just wanted to be on the list, but then Shaun Salcedo called.

Where's My Stimulus Payment?

"Yes, that is me. Yeah, that is me," he said. The IRS could never find Salcedo, "No doubt in my mind, that's me."

He got his refund, but never saw a dime of the stimulus, "I moved from my last apartment back in with my parents and never seen it since."

Salcedo now hopes to finally get the $600 he's entitled to, "I'm calling them tomorrow."

That's just one success story. The missing taxpayers have not been easy to find. That's why the IRS made the rare step of releasing all of their names.

If you never received that stimulus check or your last refund check, call the IRS or come by their office and act now.

The "Where's My Stimulus Payment?" tool on IRS.gov is the quickest and easiest way for a taxpayer to check the status of a stimulus check and receive instructions on how to update his or her address. Taxpayers without internet access should call 1-866-234-2942.

If you are due a regular refund, you can update your addresses and check refund status with the "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov.
