Even with gas prices over $3 per gallon, having wheels is still more a necessity than a luxury these days. In this season of giving, some auto repair shops need your help to make a ride come true for those who need it most.
Not all auto repair shops are out to "getcha." A number of local family-run garages are breaking out the extra elbow-grease to show they're honest and they have a heart.
Bob's Autodynamics and four other repair shop charter members calling themselves "neighbors helping neighbors" are planning to fix up as many cars as they can between now and Christmas to donate to victims of domestic abuse, hoping to turn their lives around. The repair shops are joining with their parts suppliers and a nationwide network under the banner of Charity Cars.
"When we get a donated car from Charity Cars, we're going to go through it from bumper to bumper and decide what that car needs to be safe and roadworthy and dependable. We will call our distributorship, Warren Distributing, and they will provide all the parts needed for free," said Bob, of Bob's Autodynamics.
When they're all fixed-up, the cars are promised to some special recipients at Safe Nest, women who are pulling themselves out of a life of domestic violence.
"Well, most of them do not have cars. Having a car, to be able to go to school, go do the grocery shopping, go pick their kids up at school, go to doctor's appointments, all of that will be absolutely vital to changing their lives," Bob continued.
The cars will come with a warranty, title, registration, and license.
He explained, "We really want this a zero out-of-pocket expense for the women. We want them to get in turn the key, and drive away.
Bob stresses that they are doing all this for all the right reasons. "We all sat down at our last meeting and decided that if we got a strong feeling in our heart and a tear in our eye, it would be good enough for us."
Here's where you come in. They need donated cars, something within the last ten years, preferably. They don't have to be great, just fixable.
Call Charity Cars at 1-800-CHARITY. They'll come and tow your car for free.
If they can't fix it, it'll be sold at auction and you get the receipt for the IRS. If they can fix it, it gets refurbished to Blue Book, and you get a receipt for that value to report to the IRS.
