Police Bust Cockfighting Operation in Residential Area

Metro Police broke up an organized cockfighting operation over the weekend. More than 160 roosters are now caged up at the Lied Animal Shelter.

Police seized the viscous birds from a house near Carey and Lamb Boulevard on Saturday in the 2600 block of Gateway Road. Police were tipped when neighbors witnessed several people coming and going from the residence.

Metro says 36-year-old Raul Rico is behind the illegal activity. He faces a misdemeanor charge of "keeping a place for baiting and fighting of animals."

Mark Fierro with the Animal Foundation explained why these birds will not be going home with anyone. "These animals are not going to be available for adoption, they're vicious, and mean," he said.

"They were taught to be that way," Fierro continued. "It would be the equivalent of taking a fighter and attaching knives to both hands."

Metro says that although cockfighting is a concern, the bigger problem is the drugs and illegal gambling surrounding these activities. They also said that this crime is difficult to catch because it usually takes place in rural areas.
