Cool at School: Making a Difference

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGASStudents are hard at work at Rose Warren Empowerment School on the west side of Las Vegas. They are working on creating a better place to play.

The students are tired of their current playground and are now raising money to build a new one. They need $62,000 to make their dream happen. They are asking their fellow students to chip in by donating any spare change they have. Right now, they have a little more than $2,000 but they are getting a big boost from the Junior League of Las Vegas.

"The Junior League is going to help raise the rest of the money because that is what we do," said Bonnie Winkleman, Junior League of Las Vegas spokesperson. "We are looking for partnerships with corporations and for individual donations."

The full payment is due in March and the playground will be built in May so that it will be ready for the start of the new school year. It will also serve as a city park.

Kids are also giving input to the builders about what they would like in a dream playground. But there are some ideas that won't make the final design including a shark tank and fishing pond.

"It would mean the world of difference to them," said James Johnson, fifth grade teacher.  "They have needed this, they really deserve this, and these are good kids and families."
