High Court Holds Court in High School

LAS VEGAS -- For the first time, the high court of Nevada set up shop in a high school in Las Vegas.

Bishop Gorman High School was the site of two hearings held by the Nevada Supreme Court.

Gorman was chosen because of its extraordinary law-related programs. Its mock trial team is ranked fifth in the nation.

Gorman's theatre was turned into court chambers for the court.

"A lot of us are used to seeing plays in here and now we are seeing an actual hearing. I think is an awesome thing," said junior Brendan Flynn.

Flynn was excited to listen to the cases right along with the justices.

"I am really interested in law and I know a lot of students are and because we live down here, we don't often get the opportunity to go to these proceedings. And for Gorman to offer it to us, saying this is right here for you, is an awesome experience," he said.

About 200 students got a chance to hear two big cases.

Supreme Court Justice Ron Parraguirre calls it Justice Across Nevada.

"It gives them an opportunity to be up close and personal with a branch of government they don't usually have an opportunity to see," he said.

The students were able to ask some questions once both hearings were done. But it didn't end there, the justices also sat with the students for lunch.
