(Dec. 14) -- If you've ever driven across Hoover Dam, you know it can be a traffic slow spot.
The 3.5-mile stretch is almost always backed up as folks travel between Las Vegas and Kingman, Ariz. The Federal Highway Administration even labeled the area "a traffic concern" back in 1965.
Now according to the Las Vegas Sun, nearby Sugarloaf Mountain will be the spot for a new bypass route. The Sugarloaf route would build a 1,900-foot bridge over the Colorado River just a quarter-mile downstream from the dam.
Engineers plan to start construction in 2002.
Hoover Dam's authorized purposes are: "flood control; improvement of navigation and regulation of the Colorado River; storage and delivery of Colorado River waters for reclamation of public lands; and hydroelectric power production.
