Editor's Note Regarding The Data Presented Here
One thing the national firearms debate has exposed is the lack of reliable statistics on certain aspects of gun use. Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies release certain data, such as what you will find on the 8 News Now website. But other data has either never been compiled at the state or local level or is impossible to gather because of existing laws.
Here are but three examples:
There is no way to reliably report the number of firearms that exist in Nevada because there is no state requirement that all guns be registered. Clark County requires handguns that can be concealed and aimed with one hand to be registered with Metro Police, but those ordinances don’t extend to rifles and shotguns.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives publishes state-by-state data on law enforcement traces of firearms used or suspected of use in crimes. But there are no readily available statistics for Clark County or Nevada on the percentage of guns used in crimes that were stolen.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports data on the number of justifiable homicides by private citizens who used firearms. But no data exists for the number of times a citizen used a gun in self-defense, nor the number of times he or she did so successfully.
