There was another Metro officer wounded in Wednesday's attack. He was rushed to University Medical Center with bullet fragments in his right leg. Metro says that injured officer was released from UMC late Wednesday night and is doing well.
The injured officer has been with Metro since 1997. His named is expected to be released Friday afternoon.
Before the injured officers' ambulance even arrived at UMC, doctors and nurses were waiting outside with a gurney ready to go. When the officer was removed from the ambulance, he was taken into the hospital's trauma center where a bed was ready and equipment to monitor his vital signs had already been hooked up.
Dr. Jay Coates is vice-chairman of UMC Trauma Center. He told Eyewitness News his staff had an half-hour head start to prepare for the officers arrival, and in trauma it's time that makes the difference.
Due to federal patient privacy laws, Dr. Coates cannot discuss the specifics of the officers' case, but did say his staff reviews their response plan weekly, to improve response time, so when the next crisis arises they are ready.
