Free Cars Given Away to Families in Need

Posted: Updated:

A lot more people are riding the bus because of the cost of gas. But some families need the bus because they don't even have a car to put gas in. Now some collision repair shops in Las Vegas are repairing older cars and giving them away to these folks.

Three collision repair shops each took in an old, damaged car, spent thousands of dollars to fix them up and then gave them to three families in need. The families that got the cars say new rides will help drive them out of financial despair.

For years it's just been Dale Henry, her three kids and two strollers. Whenever they wanted to go somewhere, she had to load them all onto the city bus, "The things that people take for granted -- the simple things, going to the grocery store, taking the kids to get shots, the little things in life. If you want to go to library or go out for the day, its very hard to do it on the bus."

Dale's bus rides have now come to an end, thanks to three car repair shops and the National Auto Body Council. They spent thousands of dollars fixing the cars up for the families, and the kids couldn't wait to take a ride.

"Things like this only happen to people on the radio or TV, but it's happening to me," said Henry.

Terry Lindemann with Family Promise says getting a car is a hand up out of deep economic despair, "They can get better jobs because they can go where the jobs are instead of having to worry about the bus system."

"It's going to be a tough year for a lot of people and we need to reach in a little deeper and help out," said Michael Quinn with 911 Collision Centers.

For Dale and her three kids, this is an early Christmas present just in time for Thanksgiving, and getting a new ride is also helping her rebuild the family that lack of transportation helped tear apart.

"I am going to see my mom. I haven't seen here in six years," she said. "It's going to be nice to put the kids in the car seat and hit the road."

The National Auto Body Council presented the cars to the families today. They will give away 46 more cars to families in need across the nation the week before Thanksgiving.
