Heat is the number one weather-related killer. And while many Southern Nevadans are acclimated to high temperatures, there's an aspect of our "dry heat" that can leave anyone more vulnerable.
Las Vegas resident, Alan Dami is not one for staying indoors all the time. But when it's 112 degrees, he does limit his exposure. And he's always sure to hydrate his body. Other than that, the California transplant doesn't mind the heat.
"Cause if you have just one weather all the time, it gets monotonous after a while. So having the hot, the winds blowing, some cool weather -- as long as you're very careful about the way the weather is and how you conduct yourself with that weather," said Dami.
And being careful is a very good idea. On average, more than 1,500 people in the U.S. die each year from excessive heat. And in Southern Nevada, you're unable to see one of nature's best indicators.
"One of the disadvantages of the dry heat is sweat, which is a good indicator to tell what you're body's doing evaporates immediately because of the heat. And you can't use it as an indicator. You have to use other indicators such as dizziness, nauseous, of looking at the color of urine," said Tim Szymanski, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.
Dark colored urine is one of the most obvious signs that you need a serious refill. Remember that tea, coffee, sodas, and alcohol do not hydrate you -- they dehydrate you. So on top of these beverages, drink plenty of water.
