Cool at School: Board Games

Updated:

One of the great challenges a teacher faces is finding new ways to reach students and help them expand their minds and learn things.

But one local high school is turning a good time into a good education.

Students at Advanced Technologies Academy participate in Board Game Marathon Night.

The board game club started last year with 25 members.  It now has over 200 making it the fastest growing club at school and it's the largest of its kind in the entire city.

Instructors say students who participate in the Board Game Night, get a chance to come together and have fun, while expanding their education.

"They are playing, they are talking, they are interacting.  Mike Patterson Math teacher tells Eyewitness News.  I use them (Board Games) in my class room to teach mathematical concepts. I think games are much more powerful than just something fun to do."

Students in the program are also excited about the unique spin the board games put on learning.

"Some board games increase your vocabulary. Saju Varghese, 11th grader tells Eyewitness News. some help train your mind, change your logic thinking. Trains your mind to the next level."

The school plans to continue its Board Game Marathon Night, since it has received so much positive feedback and results.

It's a club where membership has its privileges, and one of which is "learning" while having fun at the same time.
