Two people are hospitalized with serious stab wounds following what appears to be a random knife attack Tuesday night at a North Las Vegas supermarket.

Police are crediting a security guard for saving his co-worker's life after a man walked into the Food 4 Less at North Las Vegas Boulevard and Carey Avenue just before midnight and started stabbing people.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Jerry Gomez. He is now in custody on four counts of attempted murder.

Witnesses tell police that Gomez, who was sitting at a seat in the slot machine area, took out a knife and began stabbing a female worker who oversees the gaming area of the store. That worker was stabbed 11 times and is in critical condition at UMC.

Police say the security guard attempted to stop the attack by pepper spraying the suspect.

"Then the fight was on because then the fight went from the original stabbing victim to him," said Officer Tim Bedwell, North Las Vegas Police. The security guard was also stabbed and that is when two other store clerks entered the fight and were able to subdue the suspect.

"Who probably have no training in security. They came all the way across the store and jumped into it," said Tim Bedwell, North Las Vegas police.

Police say they believe Jerry Gomez is either suffering from a mental condition or may have been on drugs. He will be booked on several charges.
