North Las Vegas Police Step Up Crosswalk Enforcement

North Las Vegas Police took steps Sunday to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths. They implemented a pedestrian enforcement event to get drivers to respect crosswalks, and people to use them.

Lake Mead is a busy street like any other.  Its a mad dash to get across. And that's scary for drivers like Robby Robbins who have to dodge people.

"My biggest complaint is women with children trying to cross the street and they got dark clothing on and I literally come out of here literally shaking with both hands on the steering wheel sometimes," said Robbins.

Sometimes they do it just feet from crosswalks. That's where drivers are supposed to stop when someone wants to cross. But often times, cars don't stop.

On Sunday, a North Las Vegas Police officer went undercover posing as a pedestrian at a crosswalk.  When drivers didn't stop, he called in reinforcements.

Police couldn't stop them all on Sunday, but this educational and enforcement even is a start.

"We need to provide a way for these people to cross safely and get to their destinations, especially if they have children, we just want people to pay attention to people at cross walks," said Sean Walker of the North Las Vegas Police Department.

The enforcement was made possible by a grant from the Nevada office of Traffic Safety.
