Nevada will join 19 other states on a Web site allowing people to search for paroled sex offenders living in their communities.
Governor Kenny Guinn says the state will participate in the new National Sex Offender Public Registry, which can be found at www.nsopr.gov.
Under the current system, a sex offender from another state could escape detection if he fails to register with authorities when moving to a new state. A study in 2003 found that 27 percent of paroled sex offenders failed to register their address with local authorities.
Using the Web site, a person could still find out information that other states may have on the offender despite being unregistered in Nevada.
There are more than 47-hundred registered sex offenders in Nevada and more than 500-thousand nationwide.
