Monday night, two Metro police officers used a teaser on a man saying his erratic behavior made it necessary. The man died. Now Metro has launched an internal investigation into the incident.
The name of the man who died is yet known, nor are the names of the two officers who used their tazers.
The Metro officers responded to a call Monday night at the Western hotel and casino near Fremont and 9th Street. When they arrived they found a man acting erratically. He was yelling, ripping up money, and being uncooperative when officers tried to get him to calm down. So two officers used their tazers a total of three times on the man.
During one of those times, the man may have been handcuffed. Metro is still trying to pin down that information as they also work to determine if the officers used their tazers properly or not.
Metro Police Deputy Chief Greg McCurdy said, "We take our use of force issues very seriously. We review them. We have an internal use of force board that will undoubtedly review this incident and we want to make sure our officers are acting within policy. But we also want to make sure they are safe. It's very important. We want to make sure the public is safe."
The two officers who used their tazers are on administrative leave, which is common in a situation like this.
Metro also says it is prepared should the Clark County Coroner's office ask for an investigation of this case questioning whether the officer's use of force was justified or not.
