A 13-year-old girl is dead and her 11-year-old brother is hospitalized following a Friday morning accident. The driver of a 34-wheeler truck clipped a fence at a construction site bringing it down on the two as they walked to school.
The accident happened around 7:45 a.m. near Carey and Sandy Lane. The sister and brother were walking through a construction site on their way to school when they were hit.
Eyewitness Ernest Mynor said, "They should have had that fence closed or had it opened up wider so the truck could come swinging in. I'm quite sure the driver didn't see the kids and they didn't see him."
Metro says other construction workers had to flag down the truck driver and tell him that he had hit the fence. Other construction workers nearby called paramedics.
Mynor continues, "They jumped out and they started working on the little girl and started giving her CPR."
The 13-year-old girl died at Lake Mead Hospital becuase of her injuries. The 11-year-old boy's injuries were not as severe.
Eyewitnes Eernest Mynor said, "They got him to moving around and he was trying to talk."
Mynor says the problem with construction sites like this are that kids always cut through to get to school. He says it is a dangerous area and it's only a matter of time before something like this happens again.
"Just clean it up for the kids, have it safe for them to walk to school," Mynor adds.
Metro police are investigating. They say it will be a little while before they decide whether to file charges against the driver.
The condition on the 11-year-old boy has not been released.
