Police Confirm McCoy Mistaken Identity

(Mar. 19) -- Finding Charles McCoy, Jr. was just an incredible stroke of luck with a series of complicated coincidences that led to the arrest. Eyewitness News exclusively brought you the claim of a man Thursday night saying that it was mistaken identity, which led Conrad Malsom to find McCoy's car.

And Friday morning police confirmed that the claim was true. Mike Cholak from Wisconsin was the man who had lunch in the Stardust sportsbook on Tuesday. Malsom saw Cholak and thought he was the Ohio sniper suspect. That mistaken identity led Malsom and a friend to search nearby parking lots -- stumbling on McCoy's green Geo Metro.

Det. Zach Scott, Franklin County sheriff's office: "We don't believe that was him, but he actually went and found the car. But hey, he did a good job and found the car."

Mike Cholak, mistaken for McCoy, said, "I thought it was a little weird the second time he asked me about the pizza. Not weird enough to think any more about it after I left the casino."

Lady Luck was definitely with Conrad Malsom, who found the car leading police to Charles McCoy.

Also, there is new information about his short stay in Las Vegas. Eyewitness News has learned that Charles McCoy, Jr. arrived in here on Monday -- just 24 hours before his arrest.
