
CARSON CITY -- Nevada legislative leaders have announced public hearings to discuss the state's budget crisis.
The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee will hold meetings on Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, lawmakers will be briefed by staff from the governor's office on the projected $1 billion shortfall.
The panel will convene again on Thursday and review budget cutting proposals related to K-12 and Nevada's higher education system.
On Feb. 9, the IFC will review budgets within the Department of Health and Human Services. Other budgets will be reviewed Feb. 10. Town hall meetings will be held Feb. 13 in Reno and Las Vegas for public comment.
Gov. Jim Gibbons plans a televised address on Feb. 8 to discuss Nevada's fiscal problems and call for a special legislative session.
