Boulder City Unveils Wind Energy Deal

Posted: Updated:

BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- Boulder City is working on a project that could create jobs while saving energy.

A new wind turbine system is being built that's a lot smaller and its maker says it can save a lot more energy.

The city is allowing the local company Wind Sail Receptor to use the property for free in exchange free power. And it will also create jobs.

"This will bring the jobs to the local community and this is what you want. We want to go with a facility. The facility will hire approximately 91 people around the clock, five days a week," said Richard Steinke with Wind Sail. "This is not just the new age for renewal energy, but this is so efficient that you can go up against coal and natural gas pricing."

Steinke says the turbines are all made from recyclable products and are much smaller than the ones that are already around.

Making turbines will need plenty of workers. Steinke hopes in the next three to four months to start the manufacturing the turbines out of Boulder City.

The city agreed to allow the use of land for free in hopes of people living in Boulder City get to save some money in the end.

"As we get the power as projected, up to one megawatt from the one windmill, it will help. We had a recent power increase by NVEnergy. This may give us a chance to help us with that," said Boulder City Councilman Travis Chandler.

The acre of land is positioned where the turbine would get the wind from Lake Mead and the Las Vegas valley.

The turbines would be able to handle winds over 60 miles per hour.

Boulder City is estimating to get about one megawatt of power for free. Boulder City says its typical average consumption is 15 to 16 megawatts.
