CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons will deliver a special State of State speech on Feb. 8 to discuss the budget crisis and call for a special legislative session.
The governor's office on Monday said meetings are being held to determine what bills will be considered during the special legislative session to plug a shortfall estimated at close to $1 billion.
Gibbons has said everything is on the table, including possible layoffs, reduced government hours and extended furloughs. Gibbons also has proposed sweeping reforms to education, including eliminating mandates for full-day kindergarten and class size reduction.
Under the state constitution, the governor set the agenda for what is considered during a special session.
