LAS VEGAS -- Dozens of volunteers are using the Martin Luther King Day holiday to give a Las Vegas school a makeover. Lunt Elementary got a good scrubbing -- from the walls inside the hallway to the outside playground.
There were many students among the volunteers ready to help.
"I feel glad because the school is going to be really clean when I go to school," said student Maryani Rodriguez.
Students were not only scrubbing the walls. They painted a mural, giving the hallway a more vibrant feel. The effort was coordinated through by the United Way and community partners who donated the supplies.
The biggest project was landscaping the courtyard so it could be transformed into a reading area.
"It's absolutely incredible -- a great way to bring community together. We have no children here today for school, but have 150 plus parents and children helping us," said Principal Thelma Davis.
Davis was surprised to see such a big turnout and says the school hasn't undergone a cleaning like this in the three years she's been there.
Luckily the rain didn't seem to bother any of the volunteers. They were kept pretty busy just trying to complete all the projects.
