Mayor Oscar Goodman Delivers State of the City Speech

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has given his annual State of the City address in better times. This year, the mayor spoke openly about the city's budget troubles and urged Las Vegas to diversify its economy beyond gaming. "When I was elected in 1999, nobody knew how good we had it," the mayor said. "The times were extraordinary as far as a feast was concerned. Then last year, the famine came."

Goodman believes downtown redevelopment is the solution to the city's economic problems. During his speech, he cited the new $150 million Rush Tower at the Golden Nugget, which opened late last year in a bad economy. The mayor also touted other downtown projects such as the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.  The center is a collaboration of the Keep Memory Alive Foundation, the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute and the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. Talk of an expansion is already underway. "Once they make that decision, and I pray that it will be an affirmative one, we have a medical Mecca in our community. (It's) very similar to what took place in Houston during the '70s when they had the gas and oil crisis," the mayor said.

Goodman believes the Smith Center for the Performing Arts will allow Las Vegas to evolve from a tourist destination to one of the country's leading cosmopolitan hubs. The mayor also wants to build a sports arena, casino/hotel and entertainment district near the current city hall. He has long promoted a new city hall project as a way to create jobs, and he lashed out at critics who disagree with the city's approach to downtown redevelopment. "It's a win-win, so I don't want to hear any more nonsense about it from any stupid people," he said.
