Clinical Trial Under Way for Common Eye Problem

(Dec. 30) -- A local ophthalmologist is participating in a clinical trial for the laser reversal of a common eye problem that makes reading glasses a must for millions of people over the age 40.

Dr. Jon Siems is among the first to perform the LAPR procedure. The laser surgery was developed to correct the underlying cause of presbyopia. The condition affects near vision and makes up-close reading difficult or impossible without the aid of glasses.

During the procedure, eight laser incisions are made into the white part of the eye. Certain muscles are pulled outward and away from the lens. Then, the skin is closed over the incision and resealed.

Results so far have been encouraging. Las Vegas resident and avid reader, Carol Russell, had the LAPR on both eyes 2 weeks ago. She says, "I haven't put reading glasses on since surgery. I know I have a ways to go but I'm real pleased so far.”

Dr. Siems says, "What this technology will allow us to do is to correct the underlying cause of presbyopia and free patients from their dependence on these optical aids for near vision."

Unlike lasik surgery, this procedure concentrates exclusively on presbyopia and near vision. It does not correct other problems such as far-sightedness or stigmatism.
