Some Las Vegas Businesses Grow Despite Recession

Updated:

While the economy has forced many businesses to cut back, some are actually growing and hiring employees.

Behind a water wall in a new building in Henderson sits a private corporate lending firm that is expanding.

"To find stability and actually see constant paychecks coming in and able to do something where you know the company is going to be here the next day is fantastic," said Gilbert Martinez, employee.

He is one of 30 new hires this year for CM Capital Services. The company handles trust deed investments and is one of the largest private lending firms for developers in the southwest United States.

"When I see new faces here, then it also gives me a feeling of security and comfort knowing that hey, if they are continuing to expand, then I don't have to worry about coming in one day and the office being shut down," Martinez said.

That's what happened at his last job with a mortgage lending company. CM Capital Services CEO Todd Parriott says his business adjusted in this recession and is now seeing avenues to grow.

"It's been a really nice feeling that we have been able to continue to expand our company and grow. It's nice to be able to contribute some positive things," said Todd Parriott, CEO, CM Capital Services.

Billy Richardson also had that same feeling. The Las Vegas native's latest project will bring the world famous Pink's Hot Dogs from Los Angeles to the Las Vegas Strip.

"We will look to hire about 30 to 35 people," said Richardson, Pink's owner.

He's a little nervous about opening in August during a recession, but says others misfortune opened created a great opportunity.

Richardson will hold a job fair this summer and expects a huge response.

"We have a place already existing. Every time we put up a server or bartender, we get at least 200 or 300 applications," he said.

Both Parriott and Richardson say they a lot of over-qualified applicants ready to jump on an opportunity.
